Nemzetközi Klezmer Fesztivál

Over three evenings, different traditions and moods of klezmer music come together in Balatonfüred. Among the performers will be Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, and Israeli ensembles, giving the audience a glimpse into the diversity of the genre. Alongside lively, dance-inviting melodies, more intimate and thought-provoking musical moments are also part of the program. The concerts take place at the Kisfaludy Open-Air Stage, just a few steps from the shore of Lake Balaton. The organizers also prepare flavors alongside the musical experience: visitors can choose from Jewish and Hungarian dishes, drinks, and desserts, while a craft and gift fair awaits those interested. All concerts of the festival are free to attend. The idea of the festival grew out of more than two decades of work and international experience of the Klezmerész Cultural Association. The ensemble previously represented Hungary three times at the Israeli Cfáti International Klezmer Festival, where they experienced firsthand the special atmosphere of an international klezmer meeting. Klezmerész has also been a regular performer at the Budapest Jewish Cultural Festival for years. Péter Garai stated that significant help in realizing the festival was provided by Dr. István Bóka, mayor of Balatonfüred, and Dr. Ferenc Olti, head of the House of Jewish Excellence. The organizers hope that the Balatonfüred festival will not be a one-time event but the beginning of a new tradition that can enrich the city’s and the domestic Jewish cultural life’s programs for many years. In mid-July, klezmer music will fill the Kisfaludy Open-Air Stage in Balatonfüred for three evenings. The organizers warmly welcome everyone who would like to spend a few summer evenings with good music, friendly conversations, and delicious bites by the shore of Lake Balaton. The event is also supported by the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (Mazsihisz).
